#1: The number of times you take the RD exam, and your score(s) are not reflected of your quality as a dietitian. As you have already noticed so much for this exam is not even related to what we do as dietitians. Am I better oncology dietitian because I know my scoop sizes and management theories…NOPE! You have already have so much knowledge after completing school and the DI! Don’t forget that!
#2 More people than you think have to retake the exam. With pass rates of ~68% for the first attempt, odds are that you already know someone who also didn’t pass the first time. Remember that what people are posting on social media is an edited version of their lives. Most people aren’t brave enough to share publicly the negative parts of their journey to become a registered dietitian. The exam is so different than tests in school and on such a variety of topics that often students who have also done well academically have to shift how they are studying to pass.
#3 The dietitian career needs you! Each of our have a unique background, knowledge base and skill set that we bring into the role of dietitian. There are so many dietitian carriers that did exist a few years ago. Never did I think that I would have a job that allows me to use my love of teaching, public speaking skills and nutrition to run a tutoring business.
Most of all don’t forget to take today to celebrate you! RD credential or not, you are still a great asset to the dietitian profession and next year’s RD Day will be your first RD Day as an RD and it will be great!
