Lessons Learned

Since officially launching my LLC in October I have learned many things. Some of them I have learned through courses or advice from colleagues, but the majority of these things I have learned through trial and error. Here are my top 4 lessons that I have learned over these past few months:

Lesson #1: Don't hid your prices and don't be afraid to stick to them.

This allows my potential clients to know right from the start is my services are something within their price range. Having my prices also allows my potential clients to compare pricing and help them to determine which program would be best for them.

In the beginning days of my business I was so worried to ask for the price for what I know my services are worth. When I review the prices with my potential clients I always like to talk about the value of that service over the cost. Yes that one-on-one session is $50, but think about all that includes rather than the service as just a number. This is also why I offer a variety of services. If in speaking with a client they are looking for services at a lower cost I am always able to direct them to my group tutoring, recorded lectures and free Facebook page. Everyone's needs/resources are different and that is why I offer a variety of services/products at varying prices and allow for my students to customize their programs and use payment plans if they need. As a recent student said, "Worth the investment 100%!"

Lesson #2: The best clients are the ones who are excited to work with you!

One of the reasons that I have my Facebook group and Instagram is so that my clients have many opportunities to get to know me and see my teaching style. Not every tutor is the right fit for every student and it is important for them to have opportunities to see if we would be a good fit before they have to commit to working with me. This is why during every discovery call I ask the client why they are interested in working with me. The more motivated and excited the student is about working with a tutor the better the outcomes tend to be.

Lesson #3: Adding an option for a discovery call is key!

Adding the discovery call option to my website has helped so much to increase my client leads. It provides a potential client with a clear next steps after they have become interested in working with me. It also allows me an opportunity to learn more about a client then I ever could via email. Discovery calls are always free and are commitment free. They allow the client to ask any questions that they have and for me to give them my recommendations about their study plan.

Lesson #4: It is not going to be perfect so accept that and learn as you go!

My personal motto is fake it until you make it. When I first started tutoring for the RD exam in March I had no experience and no idea where to even start. Since then I have learned a lot through trial and error. Testing out different teaching methods, projects and services along the way has allowed me to build the successful business that I have now. Since starting I now know how to make a lesson plan, how to do a Facebook live/Instagram Reel/IGTV, how to teach a class of 15 students and how to run a successful group program, among many other things. If you don't try you will never learn.

I'm sure I'll learn even more as the months go on, but I'm really proud of how much my business is grown and the positive feel back from my students.
