After MNT, the math on the exam is the second most common topic that my students report to be their biggest trouble area. We hate the math for so many different reasons and here are common responses when I ask my students why:
· I have never been good at math!
· I’m never going to use these equations in real life!
· I am never going to be able to memorize all the equations!
· I see math and my brain sucks down!
· Just seeing numbers in a question stresses me out!
Even when I was studying for my exam, I would put myself down for hating the math until I learned how to study this section correctly. Like you, I was never a good math student. I was fine in my internship with the clinical math (TF, TPN, weight conversations, etc.), but EP/AP or any financial equations…HARD PASS.
Because the exam is an adaptive exam (meaning that is senses your weaknesses and alters your exam to give you more questions on that topic), if you don’t know your math you will likely get 4-6 math questions and answering those correctly can be the difference between a 24 and 25. This is any it’s so important to study in away that allows the math to finally make sense and allows you to clear these questions.
This is exactly why I created My Math Bootcamp. This 3 part course is designed for students who struggle with the math portion of this exam, and don’t forget that math isn’t just in Domain 4! You will start out in my Equations Part 1 and Equations Part 2 review classes. In these courses I break down the equations (32 total) by reviewing:
A. The definition of the equation and reviewing in what situations we would use it.
B. The formula for the question.
C. How to apply the equation in a practice question.
This method helps you to move away from just memorizing formulas to see each equation as a topic. This lens will give you increased mobility in the topic and allow you to apply your knowledge to situational questions whether they are asking you to do math or to interpret a financial ratio.
Once you have the basics of each equation under your belt, you will then move into the 2hr practice equation class where you will be exposed to questions that are higher difficulty and more similar to the exam than the examples given in Equations Part 1 and Equations Part 2. You are provided 2 minutes to work on the practice question and then I walk you through how to answer each question. In addition to the 3 recorded classes, you will also receive my Equations Study Guide and a Math Homework assignment that can be emailed to me for grading.
