FAQ: How Much Should I Study Each Day for the Registered Dietitian Exam?

During discovery calls with new students this week, one of the most frequently asked questions was what is the correct amount of hours to study each day. While there isn't one correct because everyone is different, there are some things I wouldn't recommend as they tend to lead to burn out.

Avoid a Study Schedule that Includes:

  1. Studying more than 5 hours a day. Even for my students who are studying full time studying more than 4-5 hours a day tends to be too much. Even if you have all day to study it is likely that some of it will not be focused. I would rather you study less hours that are focused vs maxing out studying hours.

  2. Studying when you are tired. If your brain if off after a long day of work/school, it is going to be difficult to retain what you are studying. You want to block your studying time when you are most alert. This is why often studying on the weekends or the mornings can be helpful.

  3. No days off. You need a day to rest. If all you do is study all day every day, you are going to burn out. A day off not only gives your brain a break, but it is something to look forward to and helps keep things in your schedule that are good for your mental health (spending time with people, exercises, etc.)

  4. Doesn't include time to review. When you are studying for the exam you don't want to just go Domain 1 -→ Domain 2 -→ Domain 3--→ Domain 4 -→ Exam. When you are making your study schedule be sure to add in pockets to not only review what you have covered over the past week, but time to loop back on trouble areas you identified as you study.

  5. A schedule that only has 1 form of studying. The best way to study is to use a variety of methods. Your schedule shouldn't only involve reading, watching videos and taking practice exams. You want to also have time to take notes, make review materials, explain topis out loud and do homework assignments.
